Setup

Cardboard Dining Table: We pushed all the moving boxes into a long free-form banquet table of various heights and sizes. Guests’ names were written in fat marker on the boxes at their places. For seating, people lounged on giant orange and pink and gold floor pillows, harem-style. Because the only box we couldn’t find was the china, we used brightly colored paper plates, from chargers to dessert plates, in pink and orange and gold. As it was February, right around Valentine’s Day. we tore pages from steamy romance novels and slipped them under the plates, so when the Vietnamese long noodles, a reputedly lucky dish, was taken away, guests discovered their pages and read aloud to each other about heaving bosoms and aching loins as they helped themselves to champagne splits. Empty paint cans the workers had left behind became tulip vases down the center of our up-and-down table. On the sidewalk, we drew a heart-shaped Swellcome mat in chalk, to mark the entrance of the new love shack.
